How to Move Around the City

The Empresa Malagueña de Transportes (EMT) operates an extensive network of bus lines covering the entire city and connecting to nearby areas.

Buses are a frequent and affordable way to reach most points of interest, including the city center, beaches, museums, and the Congress venue.

Look for the red and white buses of EMT Málaga. Each bus stop clearly displays the routes serving it and their schedules.

Fares: You can purchase single tickets directly from the bus driver (exact change is often appreciated). However, for multiple journeys, consider purchasing a rechargeable travel card (e.g., a 10-trip Bono-Bus) at tobacconists (‘estancos’) or kiosks. These cards offer significantly reduced fares per trip.

Useful Tip

EMT Málaga has a user-friendly mobile app and website where you can check routes, schedules, and real-time bus locations, which can be very helpful for planning your journeys.

Málaga has a modern and efficient metro system with two lines currently in operation.

The metro is a fast way to travel between certain key areas of the city, particularly connecting the city center with the western districts and the University of Málaga.

While it might not cover every single location, it’s a valuable option for reaching specific points quickly and avoiding traffic.

Stations are clearly marked with a distinctive “M” logo.

Fares: Similar to the bus, you can buy single tickets or opt for a rechargeable travel card for better value. Tickets can be purchased at vending machines in the metro stations.

The Cercanías Málaga is a suburban train service that connects Málaga city center with towns along the coast, such as Fuengirola and Benalmádena (where the airport is located).

While primarily for reaching destinations outside the immediate city, it can be useful for accessing the airport or exploring nearby coastal areas if you have some free time during the Congress.

The main Cercanías station in Málaga is Málaga-Centro Alameda, conveniently located in the city center.

Tickets can be purchased at the station ticket offices or vending machines.
